The Caol Ila distillery (pronounced Cull Eela) is located in a bay near the port Askaigs on Islay. The whisky has been launched to water for over a century. Caol Ila is the Gaelic name for the Islay Sound, the narrow sea that separates the island from Jura and is one of the most remote and beautiful places on the west coast of Scotland. Founded in 1846, the distillery is located on the coast of the Islay Sound, an area originally chosen for the clean water of the Loch Nam Ban, which still serves as the main source of water. The 12-year-old Caol Ila is fresh and fruity sweet with a mild character and impresses with its bright straw colour and a delicious balance of the aromas. Its clean, delicious bouquet reveals subtle citrus notes with a hint of smokiness. At the beginning, a solid and mild sweetness dominates that transitions into a pleasant smokiness and ends in a sweet-smoky finish. This single malt was the outstanding winner of the silver medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition 2015.
